When it's 45°C outside, a weak car AC makes every drive miserable. Topping up the gas isn't always the answer. Here are the most common reasons a car AC stops cooling in the UAE, and how each one is fixed.
1. Low refrigerant (AC gas) from a leak
The AC system is sealed, so if the gas is low there is almost always a leak somewhere: a pipe, an O-ring, the condenser or the compressor seal. Refilling without finding the leak only works for a short time. A proper repair includes a leak test.
2. Compressor or compressor clutch problems
The compressor is the heart of the system. If you hear grinding or clicking when the AC is on, or the air only cools when the car is moving, the compressor or its clutch may be failing.
3. Blocked condenser or faulty cooling fan
The condenser sits in front of the radiator and releases heat. Dust, sand and insects block it, and a weak cooling fan makes it worse. A common sign is AC that cools on the highway but turns warm in traffic.
4. Clogged cabin filter
A dirty cabin filter reduces airflow and can cause a bad smell from the vents. It is cheap and quick to replace, and in the UAE it should be checked at every service.
5. Electrical faults
Relays, fuses, pressure switches and sensors control the AC. A single faulty part can stop the compressor from switching on even though the system is fine.
6. Blend door or actuator failure
If the air is cold on one side and warm on the other, or the temperature won't change, a blend door actuator behind the dashboard may have failed.
How to keep your car AC healthy
- Get the AC checked before summer, not in the middle of it.
- Run the AC regularly, even in cooler months, to keep the seals lubricated.
- Replace the cabin filter at every service.
- Park in shade or use a sunshade to reduce the load on the system.
Frequently asked questions
Is a car AC gas refill enough?
Only if the system has no leak, which is rare. If the gas is low, it escaped somewhere. We test for leaks first so the fix lasts.
Why does my car AC cool while driving but not in traffic?
This usually points to a blocked condenser or a weak cooling fan, which can't remove enough heat when the car is standing still.
How long does car AC repair take?
A gas refill and leak test is often done the same day. Compressor or condenser replacement depends on parts availability.
